When Dr Regan Anderson's not playing a tune, fishing a stream or tramping a track, he's synthesising natural products and other biologically important chemicals with IRL's Carbohydrate Chemistry group.

Dr Regan Anderson has been working for IRL for the past five years. The Senior Research Scientist studied chemistry at the University of Canterbury and was awarded a PhD in 2002.

He then travelled to Grenoble, France, and spent two years completing a postdoctoral fellowship. Dr Anderson returned to New Zealand in 2005 and took up a position with the Carbohydrate Chemistry group.

Synthetic organic chemistry is his main area of interest. He has been involved in developing new methodology, synthesising natural products (Variolin B, Camptothecin) and other biologically important chemicals such as Phosphatidyl Inositol Phosphates, α-Galactosyl Ceramide and analogues.

Outside of work, Dr Anderson plays the piano and the guitar and enjoys outdoor activities with family, including walking, fishing and tennis. He is part of a local church and also gets involved in helping new refugees and migrants settle into the Wellington region. He provides some of the new residents with one-on-one English tutoring.
