Advanced ceramic facility opened

A new $1.5m ceramics research facility was officially opened at Industrial Research’s Lower Hutt site in March by the Minister of Science, Pete Hodgson.

It houses a range of sophisticated equipment and ceramics processing facilities such as atmosphere-controlled furnaces for firing samples.

CEO Geoff Page said the investment in the new facility confirmed the growing prominence which ceramics science and research had achieved in New Zealand and internationally over recent years. "The ceramics team is developing a substantial reputation both here and overseas for its work in applying advanced science and technology to industry."

"Use of advanced ceramic materials was expanding rapidly worldwide", he said.
