Commercial cooperation

IRL has joined together with three other Crown Research Institutes (CRIs) and six universities to form KiwiNet (Kiwi Innovation Network), an organisation whose goal is boosting the scale and impact of the commercialisation of technologies and/or intellectual property (IP) derived from publicly funded research in New Zealand.

The organisation aims to achieve this goal by facilitating and fostering a thriving national innovation ecosystem capable of significantly transforming the outputs of public research organisations (PROs), thereby maximising the economic benefits for New Zealand.

KiwiNet’s founders are Lincoln University, the University of Canterbury, WaikatoLink, Viclink, AUT Enterprises Limited, Otago Innovation Limited, AgResearch, Plant & Food Research and SCION.

“KiwiNet is an excellent example of how PROs can collaborate in an open and transparent manner to improve the commercial outcomes of publicly funded research for the benefit of the wider New Zealand economy,” says IRL Investments & Commercialisation Manager Tim Balmer.

“The mutual trust that exists between the KiwiNet partners is a cornerstone of the organisation, and contributes to the increased opportunities for collaboration.”

Building on the successful UniCom university consortium model, KiwiNet will act as a hub for commercialisation activities of its member organisations, with a total combined research expenditure of more than $500 million across the 10 current members.

KiwiNet aims to provide a focal point for regional and national collaboration to support its members and participants in the wider innovation system.
