High value lipid products
The aim of this FRST[?] funded research is to generate new niche high value lipid ingredients for export markets. This will be achieved by developing and demonstrating a suite of lipid fractionation, chemical and enzymatic synthesis technologies to produce the lipids, which utilise crude extracts produced from end-user supplied raw materials and supercritical extraction and associated green technologies; and by fully characterizing the chemical composition and bioactivity of the lipid products this produced.

The key steps are:
- Development of process technologies for separating and producing lipid fractions with desired bioactivity or functionality; and the transformation of lipids to other forms that enable more convenient separation and/or improved bioactivity.
- Chemical characterisation and determination of bioactivity, involving the identification and quantification of lipids, levels of oxidation products, peroxides, free fatty acid content, phospholipid content, fatty acid profile, polyunsaturated fatty acid content, and in vitro bioactivity tests that target selected health conditions.
- Transfer of the process technologies and lipid products to our primary end-users.
Successful outcomes will be based on:
- Meeting international market requirements for high value lipid products with validated composition and bioactivity, using IP-protected processing technologies
- Leveraging New Zealands’ natural resources, investment in processing and product development capability, and development of market and distribution channels.
