Key grip device

An orthotic device for tetraplegics that restores thumb pinch grip, while avoiding invasive surgery and providing better quality of life.

We have developed an orthosis for tetraplegics that restores thumb key pinch grip. This motion is desperately needed by tetraplegics as the alternative is either dependence on caregivers for basic activities of daily living or invasive hand surgery requiring extensive rehabilitation. The device is relatively simple and produces a key grip using an extension of the wrist.

Industrial Research is now involved in pilot manufacturing development. This means developing a range of sizes and a prescription system for occupational therapists.
Two groups are being targeted for the device - those who have the ability to extend their wrist and those with no wrist extension ability.

We are interested in talking to organisations who could benefit from the use of mobility devices in their environment, and with current or potential manufacturers of rehabilitation equipment and assistive devices who would like to find out more about our capabilities. We are also keen to hear from other research groups working in this field.
