HTS[?] conductors have enormous potential in power systems applications such as transmission cables, generators and motors, transformers, fault current limiters, superconducting magnetic energy storage.

has begun to design and construct a prototype HTS transformer.
HTS transformer characteristics:
- 3-phase 1 MVA 11 kV/415 V
- Cooled to 70 K using a closed cycle liquid nitrogen cryosystem
- The first transformer to use 2G HTS Roebel cable
Major funding for the prototype transformer is provided by the High Technology Transformational Research, Science and Technology (TRST) programme. The transformer will be completed in early 2013 and then tested in the Vector Electricity network.
